Drift Phonk Goes Mainstream: DVRST’s ‘Close Eyes’ in the Spotlight

While rewatching the original Jersey Shore series on Hulu (the remake is trash, judge me all you want), a commercial break caught my ears. As I was getting ready for work, I heard the unmistakable sound of Drift Phonk. Specifically, DVRST’s track ‘Close Eyes’ brought pleasure to my ears and made me stop in my tracks.

Drift Phonk: Defined

“A subgenre of phonk, emerged in the late-2010s in Russia. It is characterized by the use of high bass, cowbells, and distorted sounds, making the lyrics of the samples often unrecognizable.” – Wikipedia

WhAt’S GoPufF? (Who cares…it’s DVRST!)

By the end of the commercial, I still couldn’t figure out what was being advertised—GoPuff. Pulling up YouTube, there it was: the GoPuff commercial in its entirety.

The top comment:
“I knew I had to search this ad up the moment I heard ‘Close Eyes’.”

Same, bro, same. That’s why we’re all on YouTube searching for GoPuff (which is similar to Instacart or any app delivery service in your area).

I am a Drift Phonk connoisseur. This subgenre of Phonk can put me in a relaxed, decompressed state at home or help me zone in at the gym. DVRST’s ‘Close Eyes’ being used in commercials makes me appreciate Drift Phonk and EDM even more, as it’s now gaining mainstream traction.

Listen for yourself and check out the GoPuff commercial below.

If this track doesn’t put you in a dreamy, euphoric state, then nothing will.
