The 2000s fashion was all about that out-of-this-world trashy excellence, if those two words even make sense together. Think back to the days when Jersey Shore and The Simple Life ruled reality TV, and MTV’s TRL was your daily fix. Numetal music wasn’t just a sound—it was a movement that dictated the dress code for guys, layered T-shirts over long sleeves, paired with spiked hair and wallet chains. The 2000s were a firestorm of questionable fashion choices that somehow worked in perfect harmony. I spent my late 20s and early 30s living in low-rise jeans, Uggs, chemises, V-neck tops, asymmetrical skirts, and of course, those iconic low-rise velour tracksuits.
Shopping for a 2000s Comeback
Last weekend, I decided it was time to bring back 2000s fashion for Fall 2024. Call it nostalgia or just sheer boredom with modern trends, but Baroque Medusa is on a mission. As if the Universe was on my side, I found myself at the Santa Anita Mall, the same place where I shopped for these looks 20 years ago. My first stop? Nordstrom for the Ugg Classic mid-boot in Chestnut.
Side note: my original pair, now RIP, was bought in 2004 for $100. This time around, I shelled out $189—crazy, right?!
Time Traveling Back to 2003
After scoring my Uggs, I wandered into Zumiez, and there it was—Famous Stars and Straps and Ed Hardy front and center. I fucking lost it. Did I just time travel back to 2003? Because it sure felt like it! Naturally, I snagged a Famous Stars and Straps hoodie, in black, of course, and an Ed Hardy zip-up hoodie in hot pink. Sadly, no velour tracksuits or asymmetrical skirts were in sight, but that’s what online shopping is for. A quick search on Shein had me securing those iconic 2000s skirts at incredibly cheap prices. Mission accomplished.
