At one point, this entire side yard was literally just dirt.
Not “rustic desert chic.”
Not “minimal landscaping.”
Not “intentional.”
Just… dirt.

A long, awkward dirt side enclosure in the desert with no privacy fence, no furniture, no vibe, and enough dust to humble even the strongest delusions of grandeur. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned while staying #dayclubready in the middle of the desert, it’s this:
Never underestimate what a little chaos, manifestation, and a woman with landscaping gloves can accomplish.
This is the full before and after backyard transformation story of how I accidentally created the Dayclub SEAZN Private Resort. It is no longer just my blog name. It’s my own private resort-style lounge deck hidden behind vinyl fencing, palm trees, and desert mountains.
Before the Backyard Renovation: Dirt, Wind & Delulu Grandeur
Before the vinyl fence installation, the space didn’t even feel enclosed. It felt like a random strip of desert next to my place.
The ground was uneven. The dirt was everywhere. The wind was doing what desert wind does best: disrespecting literally everything.

Once the vinyl fencing finally went up, the entire space immediately started feeling different. More private. More intentional. More “boutique Palm Springs Airbnb” and less “construction zone.”
But the reality?
I still had to rake the damn desert.

And yes, I mean that literally.
At one point I was fully having a Spaceballs moment in my head:
“WE AIN’T FOUND SHIT.”

Because I was out there combing the desert trying to level this yard by myself.
Then came the getting-down-on-my-hands-and-knees part and literally leveling the dirt manually with landscaping gloves that reached to my elbows.
Because do I LOOK like I’d do manual labor without gloves? Motherfucker, please.
Still, I raked, smoothed, leveled, adjusted, re-raked, and kept going until the yard finally started looking like a real outdoor space instead of an abandoned side enclosure.
The Backyard Furniture Manifestation Story (Because Apparently the Universe Has Jokes)
Now let’s discuss the part that sounds fake but unfortunately for everyone involved is completely real.
I had already decided I was going to buy a used patio lounge set from OfferUp.
During my morning walk, I literally told myself:
“Okay. I’m getting a lounge set. I don’t care how many trips it takes. I’ll move it myself.”
Because I hate asking people for help.
Apparently the universe heard me and said:
“Biiitch… relax.”
Because later 30-minutes, one of my neighbors down the street put out his old sectional patio set for FREE.
FREE, bitches!

An entire outdoor lounge sectional + table.
So naturally I made FIVE separate trips by myself dragging wicker furniture pieces across the neighborhood like some exhausted desert raccoon with good taste.
The second I placed the sectional against the back fence — which is not mine otherwise, it would be white vinyl as well — the entire vision changed.
Suddenly the yard had an anchor point. A social space. A resort-cabana energy.
Why I Chose Outdoor Camping Rugs Instead of Patio Pavers
Most backyard remodel ideas online immediately push expensive patio pavers, concrete work, or permanent deck installations.
But for this DIY backyard transformation, I wanted something lighter, easier, and way more “private desert resort” than suburban patio showroom.
I also didn’t want the enclosure feeling visually heavy or borderline hoarder-ish.
I wanted:
- beach club energy
- sundeck aesthetics
- tropical warmth
- bold color
- something dramatic against the white vinyl fencing
So instead of traditional patio pavers, I layered oversized outdoor camping rugs in turquoise and burnt orange throughout the space.
The rugs instantly added structure without expensive hardscaping and made the small backyard makeover feel intentional instead of temporary.
The orange rug especially changed EVERYTHING.
Against the gray lounge furniture, white fencing, palm trees, and desert sky, it suddenly started looking less like “side yard” and more like boutique resort cabana.
At night, the entire enclosure completely changes once the lighting turns on. The warm amber glow against the rugs somehow makes the whole enclosure feel cinematic.
The Chaise Lounge Setup Everyone Thinks Is for “Conversation”
One of my favorite intentional design moments?
The chaise lounges.
Several neighbors have commented on how much they like that I placed them opposite of each other because: “It makes conversation easier.”
Which is hilarious.
Because while yes, technically they can be used that way…
That is not why I did it.
I arranged them opposite each other because I sunbathe nude and didn’t want to constantly adjust the backrests every time I rolled over.
So instead of repositioning furniture every 20 minutes, I simply:
- stand up
- rotate myself
- plop onto the opposite chaise
Efficient.
Luxury.
Totally Baroque Medusa.
Peak Dayclub SEAZN engineering.
The layout accidentally worked aesthetically too.

The opposing loungers create visual balance while still preserving open space in the center of the yard, which keeps the enclosure feeling airy instead of overcrowded.
The Backyard Lighting Transformation That Changed Everything
During the day, the space feels like a private desert sundeck.
At night?
Completely different atmosphere.
The second Mother Moon and the constellations appear, the entire enclosure transforms.
I added:
- warm solar path lights
- solar lanterns
- ambient fence lighting
And suddenly the space became cinematic.

The nighttime version of this backyard feels:
- cozy
- secluded
- moody
- luxurious
The palm trees silhouetted against the sky. The warm glow against the white fencing. The amber lights framing the rug.
It genuinely feels like a boutique cabana courtyard now.
Small Backyard Remodel Ideas That Actually Made the Biggest Difference
If you’re planning your own before and after backyard transformation — especially in smaller side yards or narrow backyard spaces, creating defined zones completely changes how the area feels.
Here’s what made the biggest difference in this project:
Privacy fencing
The vinyl fence instantly changed the energy of the yard and made the enclosure feel intentional.
Defining separate zones
Creating separate spaces to make the space feel larger + more luxe:
- a social/lounge area
- a tanning deck area
Oversized outdoor rugs
The rugs acted like visual “platforms” and created structure without expensive hardscaping.
Warm outdoor lighting
This was the biggest nighttime game changer.
Leaving open space
Not overcrowding the yard is exactly why it feels elevated.
Final Thoughts: From Dirt Side Yard to Desert Resort Deck
What started as an awkward dirt enclosure somehow became:
- a private desert lounge
- a tanning deck
- a nighttime cabana
- a full Dayclub SEAZN Resort atmosphere
Most of this small backyard makeover evolved organically.
One manifested patio set.
A lot of raking.
Several mildly delusional design decisions.
Five solo furniture-moving trips.
And an unreasonable commitment to aesthetic lighting.
Now every time I walk outside, it feels like stepping into my own hidden desert resort.
Welcome to Baroque Medusa’s Dayclub SEAZN Resort, officially.
