Ballard on Prime was my FW26 September binge pick, and honestly? I didn’t know what I was signing up for. The premise reads:
“Detective Renée Ballard leads the LAPD’s new and underfunded cold case division, tackling the city’s long-forgotten crimes; Detective Ballard navigates personal trauma, professional challenges and life-threatening dangers to expose the truth.”
Sounds like a classic police procedural, right? Except no one told me this was the second spin-off from my forever favorite Prime show, BOSCH. Say what?!
In the very first episode, when Ballard’s walking through the files with her cold case crew — a mix of retired detectives, a law school intern, and a reserve officer — she pauses on one case and says out loud: “HARRY-F**ING-BOSCH.”
That’s when I knew this series was about to slap so damn good.
Why Ballard Is Binge-Worthy
Season 1 is 10 episodes of gritty basement-office LAPD energy, anchored around the cold case murder of a councilman’s sister. The deeper Ballard’s team digs, the more connections they uncover — not just between cases, but straight into LAPD corruption itself. Because what’s a police procedural without a little dirt under the nails?
The pacing is tight — no filler, no “let me half-watch while folding laundry”. This is a show where you need to actually pay attention or you’ll miss the threads weaving together. By the time I hit episodes 9 and 10, I was yelling at my screen: “OH HELL NO!” But it made sense the way it all landed, climbing the chain of command like only a Bosch-universe story can.
Notable performance: Michole Briana White (yes, Lucille Flenory from BMF) plays a survivor of attempted murder, and seeing her in this completely different role just showcased her range.
And for Bosch fans — don’t worry, he pops in 2–3 times max. Just enough to connect the dots, but not so much that Ballard can’t stand on her own. Spoiler: she absolutely can. (The only spoiler I will give 🤣)
Dayclub SEAZN Verdict: FIRE As in 💯
I binged the entire season in under a week, and if I’m honest, I’m very annoyed there’s no official Season 2 announcement yet. Scoured everywhere, nothing confirmed. (Prime, don’t play with me!)
Meanwhile, the critics are in agreement — Ballard is sitting pretty with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. And I fully agree.
FW26 binge: complete. Now it’s your turn. If you’ve watched it, drop your thoughts below (spoiler-free, please). If not? Queue it up this weekend, grab your favorite sips, and get ready to connect the dots with Detective Renée Ballard.
